The Città di Mantova Mountain Hut

The Gressoney mountain guides' hut

The Città di Mantova Mountain Hut, nestled at 3,498 metres at the foot of the Garstelet glacier, is the home of the Gressoney Mountain Guides. It was founded in 1984 by the Gressoney Monterosa Mountain Guides Association, who made the most of a generous bequest from the families of the four mountaineers from Mantua — Giorgio Bergonzi, Sergio Donati, Ugo Scalori and Vincenzo — who tragically lost their lives on the Lyskamm Nose on 22 May 1978. Since then, the Città di Mantova hut has been a warm and welcoming base camp for all those exploring the magnificent glaciers of Monte Rosa.

The hut was fully renovated in 2008, rendering the building even more welcoming and offering excellent standards of comfort. The original hut was integrated with a new west wing, thoughtfully renovated and equipped with indoor toilets and shower facilities. In the basement, a spacious room is dedicated to storing mountaineering gear, and a large tank was installed to collect water — a precious resource for running the hut. The dining room, boasting magnificent alpine views, can accommodate up to 100 guests, while the new modern kitchen ensures the hut runs smoothly.

Today, the Mantova is a modern, welcoming refuge, managed with care and dedication; a perfect base for all ascents of Monte Rosa, it is where the tradition and future of the Gressoney and Monte Rosa guides find their continuity and roots.

We asked Paolo Comune and Arnoldo Welf, mountain guides from Gressoney who personally oversaw the major renovation and have managed the refuge since 2010, what the Mantova refuge means to them. They replied: "It is the home of the Gressoney mountain guides, of which we are a part. And it is also a home for all other mountain guides who lead their clients and ours to the peaks of Monte Rosa."
