Overview

Is the Margherita Hut your ultimate dream, but you find yourself at the seaside during the summer?
Conquering Signalkuppe (Punta Gnifetti) on skins is the perfect solution for you. You will admire the hut in its winter splendour and the serene, solitary glacier, where the only sound is the crunch of snow beneath your skis. Although the hut is closed in winter, you can still access the winter shelter (sleeping ten people) and pause to contemplate the valley below from the balcony of Europe's highest mountain hut.

Trip notes: a high-altitude ski touring ascent on a glacier with an overnight stay in a mountain hut. Crossing the Lys Col at over 4,000 metres, in the heart of the Monte Rosa glaciers, you reach the highest hut in Europe. The descent takes place on a glacier with moderately steep slopes that will delight even the most demanding ski tourer, offering breathtaking views.

Programme

DAY ONE:

We meet our guide and do a quick gear check together before setting off.
Taking the ski lifts up to Punta Indren, we begin our ascent towards the Rifugio Città di Mantova.
The route is short and gentle—perfect for finding your feet with the gear, fine-tuning your technique, and getting ready for the next day's rope-team progression.

Elevation gain: 350 m
Ascent time: approx. 1.5 hours

DAY TWO:

At first light, we skin up our skis and head towards Capanna Margherita, perched on Punta Gnifetti.
The trail winds through a magnificent glacial landscape: whilst there are no technically difficult passages, we will cross crevassed areas where sound safety practices are key.
The real challenge can often be the altitude, which we might start to feel as we push past 4,000 metres.
After 4 to 5 hours of climbing, we are rewarded by one of the most spectacular terraces in the Alps: the Capanna Margherita.
After a well-earned break and a moment to take in the breathtaking peaks, we get ready for a long, wonderful descent, enjoying every single turn on the varied slopes.

Elevation gain: 1,100 m
Ascent time: approx. 4–5 hours

What to know before you set off

Mountaineering is by its very nature an adventurous activity. The Monte Rosa guides, all of whom are UIAGM certified, are dedicated to doing everything possible to minimise any hazards, but a element of risk is always present and should be embraced as part of the adventure before signing up for our activities.

The Monte Rosa Guides will always do their utmost to help you achieve your personal goals and ensure you have the best possible experience in nature. However, you must agree to trust their professional judgement whilst in the mountains and respect any decision they make, including turning back, should it be deemed necessary. Being well-prepared and maintaining a good level of physical fitness is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey on all our excursions. If, due to fitness levels or any other reason, your guide feels you are not quite ready for your chosen activity, they will happily suggest alternative adventures beautifully suited to your current level of preparation.
