Overview

Capanna Margherita, perched on the rocks of Punta Gnifetti at an altitude of 4,554 m, is the highest mountain hut in Europe. It is the pride of Monte Rosa and a highly sought-after destination for mountaineers from all over the world. The ascent to Capanna Margherita is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness who can manage a 4-to-5-hour climb followed by the descent. The hike does not involve any particular technical difficulties. There are no exposed sections or rocks to scramble over; it is a walk on the glacier to be tackled safely as a roped team.

Period: From June to mid-September.

Programme

DAY ONE:

We meet at 14:30 at the Staffal ski lift ticket office for an equipment check and a brief introduction to the route. Together we take the cable car up to Punta Indren (3270 m) and from there we begin our walk up to the Rifugio Città di Mantova (3498 m). The walk takes about 1 hour and allows us to gradually acclimatise to the high altitude. Once we arrive at the refuge, we settle in for dinner and our overnight stay.

DAY TWO:

At dawn we leave the refuge to tackle the climb towards Capanna Regina Margherita (4554 m), the highest refuge in Europe. About 4 hours of hiking await us on the Lys glacier, with immense views and a steady pace. After a brief stop at the summit, we begin our descent towards the Mantova Refuge, and then return to Punta Indren, with an expected arrival back in Staffal at around 16:30.

The duration of the climb from the Mantova refuge is approximately 4 hours.

What to know before you set off

Mountaineering is by its very nature an adventurous activity. The Monte Rosa guides, all of whom are UIAGM certified, are dedicated to doing everything possible to minimise any hazards, but a element of risk is always present and should be embraced as part of the adventure before signing up for our activities.

The Monte Rosa Guides will always do their utmost to help you achieve your personal goals and ensure you have the best possible experience in nature. However, you must agree to trust their professional judgement whilst in the mountains and respect any decision they make, including turning back, should it be deemed necessary. Being well-prepared and maintaining a good level of physical fitness is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey on all our excursions. If, due to fitness levels or any other reason, your guide feels you are not quite ready for your chosen activity, they will happily suggest alternative adventures beautifully suited to your current level of preparation.
