Overview

The Selvaggio Blu is an incredibly rewarding yet extremely challenging trek that winds along the stunning coastline from Pedra Longa to Cala Sisine, nestled within the beautiful territory of Baunei. It was created in the 1980s by two passionate Italian mountaineers, Mario Verin and Peppino Cicalò, who thoughtfully connected the historic paths of the local Baunei shepherds with remnants of the late 19th-century charcoal burners' mule tracks. Over the years, thanks largely to the dedication of local guides, the Selvaggio Blu has rightfully earned its reputation as a must-do trek for true outdoor enthusiasts.

Please note: Due to the growing popularity of this beautiful route among fellow nature lovers, some flexible adjustments may be made to the planned itinerary (such as camp locations, shepherd availability, and other details) to ensure the best possible experience, whilst keeping the true spirit of the Selvaggio Blu fully intact.

Best Season: May - September - October

Programme

FIRST STAGE:

The Selvaggio begins! We set off from the beautiful locality of Pedra Longa; following an ancient mule track, our path hugs the coastline, dominated inland by the impressive Forrola gorge. After a pleasant forty-minute walk, the trail leaves the coast and climbs upwards, conquering a significant elevation gain as it skirts the lower section of the famous Punta Giradili – the legendary Sardinian Big Wall, a dream destination for climbers from all over the world. Once we have gained the height (600 m above sea level) via the scenic ledge of the same name, we reach the Scalone di Us Ozzastros. Here, the first technical section begins, leading us to the summit of Punta Giradili. From there, we descend to the famous and characterful sheepfold of De Us Piggius, where we will stop to spend some wonderful time with the legendary shepherd Ziu Battista and his family, enjoying delicious local specialities at their fold while taking in the breathtaking views.

SECOND STAGE:

From Portu Pedrosu to Punta Salinas. An engaging stage with eight hours of hiking and a 565-metre elevation gain. We will walk along the entire ridge of Giradili, skirting Punta Ginnircu, before reaching two key passages at Bacu Tenadili. From here, a beautiful path guides us to the stunning setting of Portu Pedrosu, where we can enjoy a refreshing swim.

We will then follow a trail that takes us along the Eltiera ridge all the way to the Irbidossili sheepfold. We will set up camp as guests of the Piras Carta family, where, along with tasting the finest Culurgiones of the Supramonte, we can delight in the stories of the shepherd, a true living memory of this extraordinary land.

THIRD STAGE:

From Punta Salinas to Bacu Mudaloru. From Punta Salinas, the most famous viewpoint of the Selvaggio Blu, about an hour's hike brings us to Boladina, the gateway to the extraordinary route through the gorge of the same name. After this exciting technical passage, we reach the sheepfolds of Serra Lattone, conquering an elevation gain of about 150m to reach the spectacular, panoramic ridges of Serra Lattone.

Reaching the end of the ridge, we find an evocative passage leading to a magnificent abseil, which brings us down to the beautiful setting of Mudaloru. Having reached our destination, we will set up camp in a magical cave. After a restorative swim, we will spend a wonderful evening and night here, looking forward to the breathtaking sunrise over the sea.

FOURTH STAGE:

From Bacu Mudaloru to Ololbizzi. The shortest stage of the Selvaggio, but an exciting challenge nonetheless. From Bacu Mudaloru, we ascend a scree slope until we join the path that leads us into the splendid setting of Bacu Padente, high above the famous Grotta del Fico. From the Scalone di Urele, we reach the ridge above Bacu Padente. With three abseils, we will reach the entrance of the Su Feilau cave. A short and exhilarating caving passage leads to a dramatic abseil right over the sea, where we can enjoy a fantastic swim. From there, a short but steep climb takes us to the camp at Ololbizzi, where we can fully immerse ourselves in the wild beauty of the Supramonte.

FIFTH STAGE:

From Ololbizzi to Cala Sisine. Surely the most spectacular stage of all, leading us to the wonderful beach of Cala Sisine. This rewarding trek concludes after six to seven hours of hiking, spiced up with a few abseils and some exposed scrambles, fully secured by safety chains. Having reached Cala Sisine, there will be time to refresh ourselves with a well-deserved swim before heading to the off-road vehicles that will take us towards Golgo and onto the journey home.
