Overview

An intense four-day programme designed to explore the Monte Rosa massif by climbing 5 of its 4000-metre peaks, learning the "cramponnage" technique, self-rescue procedures and how to safely lead a rope team on glaciers, all while keeping your sights set on fantastic alpine goals.

Period: From June to September

Programme

Day 1:
We meet at 14:30 by the ticket office of the Staffal ski lifts to check our equipment together. From there, we head up using the lifts to the Colle della Bettaforca (2700 m) and start our trek towards the Quintino Sella refuge (3585 m), which we reach in about 3 and a half hours. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

Day 2:
We set off at dawn to ascend Castor (Punta Castore, 4226 m), reaching the summit in about 3 and a half hours. After taking some photos on the peak, we head back to the refuge for lunch. In the afternoon, we focus on technique: learning how to set up a pulley system for crevasse rescue and looking closely at rope team preparation, ridge progression and glacier travel. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3:
We head off early again for the traverse of the Lyskamm Nose (Naso del Lyskamm, 4100 m), following the route of the legendary Trofeo Mezzalama. After the Nose, we reach the Christ of the Peaks on the Balmenhorn (4167 m) and in the afternoon we ascend to the Margherita Cabin (Capanna Regina Margherita, 4554 m), the highest refuge in Europe. Dinner and overnight stay high in the mountains.

Day 4:
We enjoy one of the most spectacular sunrises in the Alps before climbing Zumsteinspitze (Punta Zumstein, 4561 m). On the descent, we cross the Lys Col and climb once more to the Vincent Pyramid (Piramide Vincent, 4215 m), before heading back to the Città di Mantova refuge for lunch. From there, we descend to Indren and return to Staffal via the ski lifts. Expected arrival time is around 16:30.

What to know before you set off

Mountaineering is by its very nature an adventurous activity. The Monte Rosa guides, all of whom are UIAGM certified, are dedicated to doing everything possible to minimise any hazards, but a element of risk is always present and should be embraced as part of the adventure before signing up for our activities.

The Monte Rosa Guides will always do their utmost to help you achieve your personal goals and ensure you have the best possible experience in nature. However, you must agree to trust their professional judgement whilst in the mountains and respect any decision they make, including turning back, should it be deemed necessary. Being well-prepared and maintaining a good level of physical fitness is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey on all our excursions. If, due to fitness levels or any other reason, your guide feels you are not quite ready for your chosen activity, they will happily suggest alternative adventures beautifully suited to your current level of preparation.
