Overview

The Breithorn Traverse is one of the most capturing and scenic ridges in the Alps, suspended between sky and glaciers, along an elegant and spectacular line that connects all the main peaks.

The complete traverse starts from the Klein Matterhorn, with the ascent to his highpoint Roccia Nera (4,075 m), and continues across the Western Breithorn (4,165 m), the Central Breithorn (4,159 m) and the Eastern Breithorn (4,100 m).

The route includes passages over rocky and snowy ridges, challenging traverses and abseils, offering a complete and adventurous climbing experience. The final descent from the Western Breithorn leads back to the glacier and the return route, offering breathtaking views all along the way.

Required experience: Excellent skills on glaciers and moving in a rope team, confidence on steep slopes (40°–45°), good climbing abilities on rock and mixed terrain (Grade III/IV), comfort on exposed ridges and experience in rope techniques.

Season: from June to September

Programme

FIRST DAY:

We meet in Cervinia around 14:00 at the ski lift ticket office. After a quick gear check, we take the cable car up to Plateau Rosa (3400 m). From there, we make our way to the welcoming Guide d’Ayas refuge where we will spend the night.

SECOND DAY:

Setting off from the Guide di Ayas Refuge, we ascend the stunning Verra glacier towards the Colle di Verra, before heading towards the steeper slopes at the base of Pollux. We descend slightly below the Rossi Volante bivouac and climb steady slopes up to Roccia Nera. From here, we traverse the beautiful snowy ridge, passing through the Gemello and the Eastern Breithorn, enjoying a mix of snow, mixed terrain and possible abseils. We continue along the ridge, tackling gullies, ledges and exciting rock passages to the central summit, featuring some climbing up to grade IV and spectacular exposure.

Finally, we follow the snow ridge, which is often beautifully corniced, to reach the magnificent summit of the Western Breithorn.

What to know before you set off

Mountaineering is by its very nature an adventurous activity. The Monte Rosa guides, all of whom are UIAGM certified, are dedicated to doing everything possible to minimise any hazards, but a element of risk is always present and should be embraced as part of the adventure before signing up for our activities.

The Monte Rosa Guides will always do their utmost to help you achieve your personal goals and ensure you have the best possible experience in nature. However, you must agree to trust their professional judgement whilst in the mountains and respect any decision they make, including turning back, should it be deemed necessary. Being well-prepared and maintaining a good level of physical fitness is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey on all our excursions. If, due to fitness levels or any other reason, your guide feels you are not quite ready for your chosen activity, they will happily suggest alternative adventures beautifully suited to your current level of preparation.
