Overview
The Ridge of the Soldier (Cresta del Soldato) is an excellent route for those who want to familiarise themselves with the mixed terrain typical of high mountains. The route is fairly simple but not trivial, never particularly exposed and always passable with a moving rope, without underestimating the altitude, the instability of the rock and its unpredictability.
This ridge is a thrilling first approach, an experience suitable for those who have already tackled ridges and want to take the next step.
For the more fit, it is possible to continue along the ridge to reach the Vincent Pyramid (4125 m).
Period: From June to September
Programme
We meet at 7:30 am at the Staffal ski lift ticket office and head up together to Punta Indren (3270 m). From there, we move eastwards, crossing the remains of the Indren glacier and the rocky moraines to the old station on the ridge that borders the Lys Valley and Valsesia.
With a long diagonal traverse, we cross the Bors glacier to reach the base of the Cresta del Soldato, just above the first prominent step. Here, the real climb begins along the ridge, leading us all the way up to the summit of Punta Giordani (4046 m).
For those with energy to spare, we can continue towards the Vincent Pyramid, crossing the snowy saddle that connects the two peaks. We tackle the first rocky steps of the east-southeast ridge and ascend with a few moves on rock (grade III) to the snowy dome of the summit.
